Civil marriage ceremony
On this page, you will find everything you need to know about civil marriage, from the application to the ceremony, with links to relevant e-services and information on officiants.
A civil ceremony is an option for anyone who is planning to get married and wants a ceremony that is not linked to any religious tradition. In a civil marriage, the ceremony is performed by a registrar appointed by the County Administrative Board. In Sandviken City Hall there is a special room used for civil marriages.
Apply for consideration of impediments to marriage
Before you can get married in Sweden, you must apply to the Swedish Tax Agency for consideration of impediments to marriage. This means that the Swedish Tax Agency will investigate whether there are any legal obstacles to your marriage.
You can apply for an obstacle assessment together at the tax office where one of you is registered or via the Swedish Tax Agency's website. In connection with the application, you can also state which surname each of you will have in the marriage.
It is important that you submit your application in good time before the marriage. Forms and e-services for the disability test and notification of surname are available from the Swedish Tax Agency. The certificate is valid for four months.
Submit the certificates to us in good time before the marriage
After the application, you will receive two documents from the Swedish Tax Agency, a certificate of no impediment; and a wedding certificate form which your marriage officiant must fill in. Both documents in original must be submitted to Sandviken municipality, citizen service at least five working days before the marriage.
Leave the documents directly at the reception of the town hall or send them to Sandvikens kommun, medborgarservice, 811 80 Sandviken.
